Venice Bits

We have been very fortunate not to have had any oil on our beaches but it was good to read the headlines in our Sarasota Hearld newspapers announcing "Gusher Appears Sealed for Now".  That is the best news I've heard about the oil spill.   The article reports that 70% of the almost 5 million gallons has been skimmed, dissolved by microbes, burned or  evaporated.

The Legacy Trail, 11 mile bike and walk path from Beneva Road in Sarasota to Venice has been completed.  It is receiving rave reviews from patrons about gorgeous views and sunsets and plenty of rest areas. This fall the overpass of 41 in Venice will begin to connect the Legacy Trail to our intracoastal and beaches.

Sales dipped a bit in Venice.  Total units sold in Venice during July, 2009 was 119 as compared to this year of 106.  The median price in July, 2009, was $150,000, this year $137,500.  Average price was $191,263 last year and it is $172,885 for July, 2010.  Total volume of sales in July was $22,760,330 in 2009.  This year total volume closed for July at $16,596,926.  Cash still dominates the market but financed transactions are running a close second.  Low interest rates and better appraisal process may contribute to the increase.

Venice City Council is is submitting a preliminary tax rate that may drive taxes in the town upward  29%.  This affects residents only in the city zoned area, not every development in Venice will be affected.  As decisions are finalized by Council I'll be writing about them.

Developing news is  Congress may extend the National Flood Insurance Program for five years – a move that could take some anxiety out of the home-buying process.  The program  has lapsed three times this year and is set to expire again in September. During those lapses, many potential homebuyers in flood zones have been unable to close on deals.  Mortgage companies require borrowers in flood zones to have flood insurance. Without it, lenders won’t fund the loan.  Homeownwers with existing policies have been unable to renew policies during lapses in the program.  The House has already approved the program.

The weather in Venice has been hot and humid, usually an afternoon shower between 4 to 5 p.m.   The beaches are sparkling and the Gulf is warm, feels like bath water.  Lots of wildlife in the Gulf.  Dolphins, manatees and large fish are close to shore.  Between Caspersen and Manasota Key turtle nests are plentiful.  Good signs for our area.

Hope to see you on the beach, Alice
